CLUTTERBUCK - Earp & Betts

Based on Peter Earp's kids story "A Voice in the Flowerbed" this is a musical based on the adventures of a young girl, Beth, who is shrunk down to the size of a bug. She is taken on a journey through the flowerbed where she meets many diverse characters - all bugs - and is given a strange task to overcome.

Roger wrote the music, Peter the lyrics and together with the help of guest musicians, the album CLUTTERBUCK was produced. This is full of catchy melodies which is a must for a musical. Every song tells a story and portrays the character of the bug singing it. Our lead character is Beth played by Carmel Hassle. She delivers her songs beautifully and was a joy to work with.

Michael (Bowler) Hartnet used clever voice imitations to represent the crazy characters he portrayed.

Peter Dunbar's silky vocal sang the lovely ballad "There's Always a Reason to Smile".

Melissa Lynch portayed the nasty Harriet frog and gives a memorable rendition of "Nobody Loves Me".

Trixie Douglas did a perfect imitation in the 1940's style of close harmonies for her backing vocals. Just listen to "Flowerbed Rap".

On top of this was the skill of the musicians who played supporting instruments as well as helped with the singing by all the cast.

This is a great album for all the family to enjoy.

The Story

Beth is a young girl who has just moved house with her mum, dad and her bossy, pink-haired, punk rocker big sister, whom she does not get on with.

She is feeling sad at having to leave behind all her friends and everything that is familiar to her, to start again in a new school where she doesn’t know anyone. Beth’s bad mood is made worse by the fact that she has just been told off for riding her bike through the flowerbed, leaving deep tyre tracks in the ground. She then accidentally breaks her dad’s rocking chair. In temper she picks up a ball of wool and throws it out of the window where it lands amongst the flowers.

Beth’s parents are very cross with her and leave her with a list of chores to do while they pop to the shop. Her annoying big sister just laughs at her and makes fun of her, so Beth takes herself out into the garden, putting her dad’s magnifying glass in her pocket as she goes.

It is while she is sitting on the swing feeling sorry for herself that she hears a voice talking to her from the flowerbed and an amazing adventure begins...........
